Collecting and pinning insects is a long-standing tradition in the scientific world, but it really took off as a popular, educational hobby during the Victorian Era. This childhood hobby of Satoshi Tajiri even led to the idea and creation of Pokemon! Prior to your class, visit the exhibition Small Wonders: Insects in Focus and then learn about simple insect anatomy, how to catch and prepare insects for a collection and how to pin insects. These are skills you can continue at home.
